Pots with holes
Choose pots with drainage holes and add a layer of expanded clay at the bottom so the roots do not rot.
The right light
Check whether the plant wants direct sun, bright light or shade before placing it. The same plant can scorch in the sun or fade in the shade.
The right soil
Universal potting mix suits most plants. For succulents, orchids and acid-loving plants, pick the specific one. Feed in spring and summer, using the dose on the pack.
Pets
Food for each stage
Choose food by your pet’s age and size. If you change brand, do it gradually over a week.
Fresh water
Change the water every day and wash the bowls regularly.
Bed and toys
Wash the bed now and then and choose sturdy toys of the right size for your pet.
Home and Christmas
Lights, safely
Test the lights before putting them up, do not overload sockets, and switch them off when you leave home and at bedtime.
Candles, carefully
Place them on a stable base, away from curtains and the tree, and never leave them unattended. LED candles are a good alternative around children and pets.
Storing decorations
Store baubles in boxes with dividers and coil lights loosely. They will last year after year.

Measure twice
Measure twice before cutting or drilling. A one-centimetre mistake costs more than an extra minute.
The right wall plug
Brick, concrete and plasterboard need different plugs. Tell us the wall material and the weight it must carry.
Safety first
Wear gloves and glasses and, with power tools, ear protection.
